Economic benefits of Anaerobic Digestion (AD) systems mainly include selling the energy produced in the form of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), or electricity. However, the economics of AD systems can be adversely affected when the organic loading rates exceed the threshold rate. This condition is caused by Volatile Acid (VA) accumulation which causes a change in the pH balance (acidification) of the digester killing the microorganisms that produce methane. When this happens, the digester becomes stuck or whats called soured, slowing or completely stopping RNG production. The Microbial Energy Device increases energy efficiency by removing VA's and converting them to methane. This can increase RNG production up to 5 times more than what a digester would normally produce generating up to 5 times more revenue in RNG sales.
